NAAPE / Educational Theory Outstanding Paper Prize

Beginning in 2022, NAAPE will be awarding a NAAPE / Educational Theory Outstanding Paper Prize at its conference each year. In awarding this annual prize, NAAPE is partnering with Educational Theory to honor excellent scholarship at the intersection of philosophy and education that is submitted to and presented at the NAAPE annual conference. The winner of the NAAPE / Educational Theory Outstanding Paper Prize will receive a $500 cash award. As a part of our partnership with Educational Theory, the successful prize paper will be published as a featured article in a future edition of the journal conditional on successful completion of the external peer review process.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the paper prize, you must submit your paper through the conference submissions site by July 1st. NAAPE accepts any length of paper, but please note that Educational Theory prefers papers that are in the 7,000-9,000 word range. The papers may employ any well-established style guideline (Chicago, Harvard, APA, or MLA) so long as it is used consistently throughout the paper. During the submission process, please check the box indicating that you would like your paper to be considered for the NAAPE / Educational Theory Outstanding Paper Prize. To be considered for the prize, you must verify that the paper is not yet published or in-press and will not be under consideration at a journal or other publication outlet until November 1st of the conference year.

Criteria

Papers will be assessed based on three criteria: originality, quality of the argument or inquiry, and scholarly significance for philosophy of education.

Nomination Process and Paper Prize Committee

The NAAPE Program Committee nominates four (4) papers for the Outstanding Paper Prize but does not participate in the prize review itself. The Outstanding Paper Prize Committee comprises the Editor and two of the Associate Editors of Educational Theory (with the latter to be invited by the Editor).

Conflicts of Interest

Papers authored by members of the NAAPE Executive Committee and the Paper Prize Committee are not eligible for nomination. Prior to reviewing the papers, members of the Paper Prize Committee will review the author names of the shortlisted papers. If they have a conflict of interest, they will recuse themselves from the committee. A member has a conflict of interest if they:

  • have served or are serving as a master’s or doctoral supervisor or co-supervisor for the nominated author;

  • have been (co-)supervised by the nominated author;

  • are the spouse or direct family member (child, parent, or sibling) of the nominated author;

  • have a current business or financial relationship with the nominated author;

  • are currently or have been in the last five years a research collaborator or co-author with a nominated author; or

  • have another conflict that they believe would undermine the integrity of the process.
