NAAPE / TRE Outstanding Book Prize

Beginning in 2022, NAAPE will be awarding the NAAPE / TRE Outstanding Book Prize at its conference each year. In awarding this annual prize, NAAPE is partnering with Theory and Research in Education to honor excellent scholarship at the intersection of philosophy and education. The winner of the NAAPE / TRE Outstanding Book Prize will receive a $500 cash award.

To be eligible for the book prize, you must organize and submit an “author-meets-critics” proposal for the upcoming conference through the conference submissions site by July 1st. Your submission should provide approximately 1000 words outlining how the book is relevant to both philosophy and education, why the book merits consideration for the book prize, and (briefly) why various critics were selected. NAAPE gives special consideration to books that are written in clear, engaging and accessible prose and that have clear relevance for educational practice. During the submission process, please check the box indicating that you would like your book to be considered for the NAAPE / TRE Outstanding Book Prize. Author-meets-critics panels of book prize candidates must consist of four or more people, not including the author(s) of the book. The submitted book’s publication date must be published in the year of the conference or during one of the two previous calendar years (e.g. for the conference in 2022, the publication year may be 2022, 2021 or 2020). In addition, the book should have clear relevance to philosophy and education. Edited volumes and handbooks in addition to monographs will be considered as candidates for the book prize.

In addition to these requirements, NAAPE strongly encourages author-meets-critics panels to include

  • at least one graduate student,

  • at least one K-12 educator,

  • at least one person who is not already a member at NAAPE.

Book prize winners will, in addition to the cash prize, have the contributions to their author-meets-critics session published as a book symposium in Theory and Research in Education.
